Minimizing the Risk of Home Invasions

Jordan Steib • December 21, 2022

Did you know that most residential burglars plan their home invasions before they ever happen? Most burglaries are premeditated and not executed at random. Criminals seek out homes that will be the easiest to enter, swipe valuables and possessions, and get out without being detected.

Typically, home invasions happen during the day. A burglar will likely enter your home through a side door, rear door, or garage door. Rarely do they break in through a front door. On average, thieves spend less than one minute breaking in and less than five minutes inside the home. There is no fail-safe way to prevent a break in, but there are some things you can do to deter a home invasion and decrease the odds you will be targeted.

With this information fresh in your mind, take some time to walk around your home during the day and night while putting yourself in the shoes of the burglar. Ask yourself some simple questions regarding your home and safety:

  • Are your windows locked and secure?
  • Is your garage door able to lock? Have you changed the passcode recently?
  • Is the property properly lit at night? Especially the rear and side doors?
  • Does any of your landscaping aid someone to hide without detection?
  • Are your exterior doors solid wood to prevent kick ins?
  • Have you documented your valuable possessions and stored them out of sight?

Answering these simple questions will make your home less attractive to home invaders and greatly reduce the risk of becoming a target of a break in. This will also improve your peace of mind by ensuring you are doing everything possible to make your home safe and secure.

At the end of the day, criminals will be criminals. Stopping home invasions and property crime in its tracks does not always stop the actions of outside individuals.
