COVID-19: Why It Affects Some

SOME MORE THAN OTHERS

As we face the “new normal,” one thing that has not changed is how COVID-19 affects some more than others. Why does a perfectly healthy 20-year-old with the virus have more serious and sometimes, life-threatening conditions? Comparatively, a 60-year-old who contracts the virus may not need critical care at all. Many times, it is related to prior health conditions.

Throughout the past several months, there have been several risk factors that have been identified. These factors may increase someone’s risk versus another individuals’ risk. First, advanced age, specifically those aged 65 and older, are at higher risk. These people are more susceptible to chronic illnesses and often have compromised immune systems. In addition, type 1 and type 2 diabetics are more prone to this illness. Other at-risk peoples include those with heart or cardiovascular disease and smokers. Lastly, individuals who are obese, have certain blood types or have unknown genetic factors may contract COVID-19 more easily.

PREVENTATIVE MEASURES

Of course, there are many preventative measures that you can utilize to help protect yourself. First, regularly clean high-touch surface areas with disinfectant spray. You can also wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and hot water. If you are unable to do so, use a sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.

In addition, it is important to continue stay home as much as you can. However, we understand the necessity to visit public spaces. While out, be cautious of COVID-19 and maintain safe social distancing of at least 6 feet when around other people if possible. We recommend hosting events virtually rather than gathering in medium or large groups. When it comes to COVID-19, the CDC also recommends wearing a non-medical grade face mask or covering. It is also important to monitor your symptoms daily, even if you are asymptomatic or have no known exposure.

Mobile, Alabama's location on the Gulf Coast makes it especially vulnerable to water damage. With heavy rainfall, high humidity, frequent storms, and proximity to Mobile Bay, flooding and moisture-related damage are constant concerns for businesses and commercial properties.
